“No, Mrs Shepard, the deputy head has decided to come along for the day, so we don’t require any parent helpers this time.”

We waved at the coach as it drove out of the car park for the school outward-bound day trip, then strolled off down the road together. “Look, Kate, The Duck is about to open, let me buy you an orange juice,” he smiled cheekily.

Pete certainly didn’t seem to mind my slight clothing adjustment as his cool eyes surveyed the plump skin on show.

At that moment, two mums from the village walked in and grabbed some menus. We nodded a greeting as they walked past our table. Apart from that the pub was empty.

I glanced at my watch, “Goodness, the kids will be back in a bit. I’d better go and freshen up.”
Spending the whole afternoon in the pub felt quite decadent, not something I was used to.
I used the small basin inside the cubicle to wash my hands and slosh some cold water on my face. As I opened the sliding door I got the shock of my life. Pete was standing at the entrance. His arm stretched out, acting as a barrier across the door frame.
I looked at him, eyes questioning.
